Hostel or Hotel

hostels or hotelsI tend to prefer a hotel when traveling. Recently I have seen a surge on New York City hostels. What is a hostel you ask?

If you can, picture a college dorm. With hostels comes roommates and you will have to share spaces like the bathroom, kitchen and common room. It is an inexpensive place to stay when traveling. If you are a private person and are not into sharing space, a hostel may not be for you.

Another difference between a hotel and a hostel is amenities and toiletries. Hotels supply all that for you, hostels do not. So, take away toiletries, continental breakfasts, privacy, nice furniture and there is your price difference between a hotel and a hostel.

In my opinion, it boils down to finances and privacy. Some hostels start at $22.50 per night for a shared room. That is definitely a burden relief when traveling. If you are not afraid to share a bedroom or a bathroom with a hopeful new friend, then a stay in a hostel may be just for you. Sharing a room can be great for making friends but adds some worry about keeping your belongings secure. Always make sure your hostel offers lockers.

Many hostels offer women-only dorms to relieve any anxieties a female traveler may have about sharing a room with men. Do your research before you book your hostel.
